Here’s something you don’t see every day: A college football player naming his son after a former player from a rival school without telling that player.
Arizona Wildcats wide receiver Jacob Cowing did just that.
Something you don’t hear every day…

Cowing, who grew up in Maricopa, Ariz., and transferred to Arizona from UTEP this year, ran track against former Arizona State cornerback Chase Lucas, who his two-year-old son is named after. Lucas went to Chandler High School before starring at ASU.
“I always liked the name Chase,” Cowing said Tuesday in an interview with the Arizona Daily Star’s Justin Spears. “Growing up I told my parents if I ever have a kid or a son I wanted to name him Chase.”
Lucas, 25, was selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions this year after spending five seasons with the Sun Devils.
“I remember I talked to him a couple times and he knew some other track members of my team and we all hung out, raced against each other, had fun and competed,” Cowing said.
“Honestly, I’m not too sure he knows that I named my son after him, but if he did know I think he would find that pretty cool and I think he would appreciate that a lot.”
If Lucas really didn’t know prior, he does now.
