The Arizona Coyotes announced the signing of defenseman first-round draft pick Maveric Lamoureux to a three-year, entry-level contract.
Arizona moved up from No. 32 to 29th in the 2022 NHL Draft to select Lamoureux. They also acquired 31-year-old winger Zack Kassian from the Edmonton Oilers and with the incentive to take on the veteran’s contract added a 2025 second-rounder and 2024 third-rounder.
“We are very pleased to sign Maveric to an entry-level contract,” said GM Bill Armstrong in a press release. “He is a big, strong, physical defenseman who is a very good skater and has a good shot. We look forward to watching his development this season.”
The 18-year-old put up 31 points (5 goals, 26 assists with 69 penalty minutes) in 78 games for the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League the past two years.
Lamoureux stands 6-foot-7 and weighs 195 pounds. As a defender on the Voltigeurs he ranked second in assists and points while leading the team in penalty minutes.
He more than tripled his assists and points totals from 2020-22.
Lamoureux was Arizona’s third first-round selection in 2022 after the team drafted center Logan Cooley No. 3 overall and traded up to the No. 11 pick to take center Conor Geekie.
