Diamondbacks’ No. 3 prospect Jordan Lawlar makes Double-A debut

Aug 24, 2022, 12:53 PM

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ first-round pick in 2021 Jordan Lawlar recorded a single and a walk in five plate appearances in his debut with the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old shortstop is Arizona’s No. 3 prospect on MLB.com and has impressed so far in his professional career.

Double-A marks the fourth level Lawlar has played this season.

In 81 games combined, he’s slashing .328/.428/.549 with a .976 OPS. His wRC+, which factors for run environment and sets the league-average to 100, is 157. This means he’s hit 57% better than the league average across his four professional levels. He has 12 home runs, 18 doubles and seven triples. He also has 37 stolen bases in 42 attempts.

The Diamondbacks selected Lawlar sixth overall out Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas in last year’s draft. The 20-year-old has responded by flying through the system so far. He also becomes the fifth top-10 pick to debut in Double-A and is one of three first-round shortstops to make their debut.

With Lawlar comes potentially the new era of baseball in the desert. He, 2019 first-round outfielder Corbin Carroll and 2022 first-rounder Druw Jones are all top-13 prospects in the MiLB pipeline, according to MLB.com. They, along with right-handed pitcher Brandon Pfaadt (No. 95), make up Arizona’s prospects in the top 100.

While the present has the D-backs fourth in the NL West, the future looks to be a bright one as their prospects continue developing.
