The Arizona Diamondbacks called up top prospect Corbin Carroll on Monday, confirming what MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reported Sunday afternoon.

Arizona announced it optioned veteran outfielder Jordan Luplow on Sunday to make way for Carroll’s debut. The team also activated left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith off the 15-day injured list and optioned fellow lefty reliever Tyler Holton to Triple-A.

Smith had been on the IL since Aug. 1 after he broke his right, non-pitching hand while throwing a frustration punch during a game.

Carroll will bat eighth in the order and start in right field for the home series opener Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

Carroll is MLB Pipeline’s No. 3 prospect in baseball, as the young outfielder has shown a total package of hitting, speed and defense this season.

The 22-year-old slashed .313/.430/.643 with 16 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 58 games with Double-A Amarillo before getting promoted to Triple-A Reno.

With the Aces, he hit .287 with seven long balls and 11 swiped bags in 33 contests.

Carroll hit a 463-foot shot on Thursday in a performance in which he went 2-for-2 with four walks and three RBIs.

Arizona took Carroll with the No. 16 pick in the 2019 MLB Draft. He will join a young outfield nucleus of Alek Thomas, Daulton Varsho, Jake McCarthy and Stone Garrett. Thomas and Carroll were Arizona’s top two prospects entering the 2022 season.

The Diamondbacks have a full 40-man roster after the moves.

Arizona has 36 games left on the slate and face the Philadelphia Phillies Monday at Chase Field.

First pitch is at 6:40 p.m., and you can tune in on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
