D-backs’ Zac Gallen snaps franchise consecutive scoreless innings record

Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen on Sunday snapped the franchise record of 42 consecutive scoreless innings held by Brandon Webb in 2007 in a 12-6 victory.

Gallen entered Sunday’s matchup in Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies just two outs away from tying Webb’s record and three from cracking it.

The day started with a diving catch from center fielder Daulton Varsho to record the first out. Gallen broke the Webb’s streak when Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron struck out to record the last out of the first inning that resulted in 42.1 consecutive for the D-backs ace.

The three outs in the first inning moved him into seventh place all time and 16.2 innings off of Los Angeles Dodgers RHP Orel Hershiser’s 59 innings in 1988. The streak was ended at 44.1 innings in the bottom of the fourth when Colorado tacked three runs off Gallen.

Gallen finished Sunday pitching six innings, struck out 11 and did not allow a walk.

Gallen was named the August National League Pitcher of the Month as he struck out 50 batters and walked eight during the streak that stretched in September. His ERA on the season sits at 2.50, while his WHIP is at 0.92, both career highs.

“Gallen came seemingly out of nowhere to put together one of the best pitching stretches ever,” MLB.com’s Andrew Simon said.

“The 27-year-old began his streak by throwing seven shutout innings against the Pirates at Chase Field on Aug. 8, and he hasn’t looked back since.”

The Diamondbacks are 9-1 in the last 10 games that Gallen had played in as the pitcher has posted a 8-0 record with two no decisions in that time.
