The Arizona Cardinals signed fifth-year receiver Javon Wims to their practice squad on Thursday, waiving rookie JaVonta Payton to open a roster spot.
Wims has appeared in 33 games with seven starts in his career, all with the Chicago Bears after they drafted him in the seventh round in 2018.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound wideout had his best season in 2019, when he caught 18 passes (39 targets) for 186 yards and a touchdown.
Wims played two years of college ball at Georgia, where as a senior in 2017 he recorded 45 catches for 720 yards and seven scores.
Since departing Chicago, Wims spent time in 2021 with the Cardinals’ Week 2 opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders, as well as the Cleveland Browns earlier this season.
Payton signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee and was on the roster for the preseason. He was waived during roster cuts but brought back on Wednesday before getting released once again.
The Cardinals’ receivers room continues to get hit by injuries.
On top of No. 1 receiver DeAndre Hopkins’ PED suspension for six games to start the year, Arizona is down Antoine Wesley (hip/groin) and Rondale Moore (hamstring).
While Wesley is on injured reserve for at least four games, Moore has not been seen on the practice field this week. He was joined on the sidelines by fellow backup Andy Isabella, who is dealing with a back injury.
