Tigers’ Javier Baez offers free meals to hurricane victims in native Puerto Rico

Sep 20, 2022, 9:15 AM

Detroit Tigers shortstop Javier Baez stepped up to the plate off the field to help his native country of Puerto Rico after it was hit by Hurricane Fiona.

“All those families who are in need of a hot meal can stop by (Taquiza Kitchen) in Toa Baja and we will serve it to you for FREE!!,” Baez posted in Spanish in an Instagram story on Monday.

“If your community is affected and you’re in need of a hot meal, you can call 787-665-2323 or stop by (Taquiza Kitchen) and we will make all the arrangements. Blessings to all of you!”

Baez’s home country was devastated after the vast majority of its 3.1 million people were left without power and running water.

The Category 3 hurricane reached up to 111 miles per hour, according to CNN.

Puerto Rico was reportedly hit with over 22 inches of rain as of Monday with four to eight inches still expected.

The island has not recovered from Hurricane Maria in 2017 which killed over 3,000 people and knocked out the power grid. Authorities have only reported one death on the island in 2022, according to AP.

The shortstop represented Puerto Rico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic where he won a silver medal and plans to play with the team again in 2023.
