The Arizona Diamondbacks placed starting pitcher Ryne Nelson on the 15-day injured list Wednesday due to right scapula inflammation.
In a related move, the D-backs recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Holton from Triple-A Reno.
Nelson, a 24-year-old rookie, was three starts into a terrific opening stretch to his MLB career. He threw two straight scoreless outings to begin his D-backs tenure, combining to 13.0 innings on just six hits and two walks with 13 strikeouts.
Nelson’s most recent outing was on Sunday in a loss to the Padres. The righty allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks across 5.1 innings.
Arizona’s projected starters had Nelson’s next start down as Friday at home against the San Francisco Giants.
Holton has a 4.97 ERA in 22 appearances and 38.0 innings for Triple-A Reno. He has yet to pitch in the majors.
