Report: Spurs hire former Mercury F Candice Dupree to coaching staff

Sep 23, 2022, 6:02 PM

The San Antonio Spurs are hiring former Phoenix Mercury All-Star Candice Dupree to their coaching staff, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The 38-year-old was selected sixth overall by the Chicago Sky in 2006, where she was an All-Star three out of four seasons. She then went on to the Mercury and the Indiana Fever, where she made two All-Star teams apiece.

Dupree spent 16 years in the WNBA –– seven in Phoenix. During her time with the Mercury, she averaged 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. She also won a WNBA Finals with them in 2014.

Overall, she made seven All-Star teams and averaged 14 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for five teams.

Dupree isn’t the first former WNBA player to join the Spurs coaching staff. Becky Hammon spent eight years on Gregg Popovich’s bench before taking a head coaching job with the Las Vegas Aces.
