Report: D-backs LHP Madison Bumgarner will not pitch again in 2022

Sep 25, 2022, 11:32 AM | Updated: 11:35 am

The Arizona Diamondbacks and manger Torey Lovullo are reportedly sitting down lefty Madison Bumgarner for the remainder of the season, according to MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert.

“There is no health issue with Bumgarner. Lovullo reiterated that he wanted him to end the season on a good note,” Gilbert tweeted.

The lefty had struggled in 2022 posting a 4.88 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 7-15 record in 30 games played.

Although, Bumgarner was coming off one of his best starts of the season where he threw six innings, allowed one hit, one run and struck out five against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Before Wednesday’s game, Bumgarner allowed less than five hits in a start just two times since he was ejected against the Miami Marlins in early May.

From the start of July, he had allowed three earned runs or more 10 times in 13 games.

With 11 games remaining in the 2022 season, Bumgarner was scheduled to pitch twice more this season, once against Justin Verlander and the Astros and then again in the penultimate game of the year against the Milwaukee Brewers.

In his three years in Arizona, the southpaw has a 4.98 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 15-29 record in 65 games.

Bumgarner signed a five-year, $85 million contract to keep him in Arizona through 2024.

Catch the D-backs’ final home game of the year at 12:40 p.m. against the San Francisco Giants on ESPN 620 AM and 98.7 FM HD-2.
