Pitchers Robbie Ray and Luke Weaver were teammates in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ rotation in 2019 and 2020, but they were foes in more ways than one on Sunday.
Ray’s Seattle Mariners were in Kansas City facing Weaver’s Royals, and the two put on a show with a classic national anthem standoff.

At the conclusion of the final note, Ray and Weaver stayed outside the dugout with hats off, hands on hearts. Their teammates brought water and towels to keep them going.
They lasted so long, the umpires had to get involved, telling them to stop. But their persistence endured, and both pitchers ended up getting ejected for standing so long and delaying the game.
Weaver was the first to retreat, and Ray pumped his fist in triumph.
It wasn’t his day to start, anyway.
Seattle’s broadcast on Root Sports made sure to capture the moment:

Weaver’s team got the last laugh, though, with a 13-12 victory over the Mariners.
