Free agent pitcher Jose Valverde was suspended Friday by Major League Baseball after a drug test came back positive.
Once Valverde signs with a team, his suspension of 80 games without pay will begin. Valverde was one of two players suspended for the use of Stanozolol, a metabolite used as a performance-enhancing substance.
Valverde played the first five years of his 12 year career in the league with the Diamondbacks from 2003-07. During that time, he had an ERA of 3.29. He had his first of three career All-Star appearances with the D-backs in 2007.
He last played in the Major Leagues in May of 2014 for the New York Mets. Since then, he has played in the Minor League system for the San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals.
