Coyotes’ MacLean “improving” after heart scare

Phoenix Coyotes forward Brett MacLean’s “condition is improving,” said Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney in a statement released by the team Monday.

The 23-year-old suffered a medical emergency last Monday while he was playing hockey in Owen Sound, Ontario. He received CPR on site, was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and was then flown by air ambulance to his London, Ontario home town. He was then admitted to Knight University Hospital’s cardiac intensive-care unit.

“[The Coyotes organization] has been in contact with Brett’s family and the hospital over the past week,” the statement said. “The reports are that he is doing well. Brett will continue to undergo tests with the cardiology team at University Hospital in London, Ontario.”

The statement contained no explanation for McLean’s collapse or whether he has left the ICU wing.

MacLean played two seasons in the NHL for the Phoenix Coyotes and the Winnipeg Jets, posting a pair of goals and three assists in 18 games. He spent the last year with the Coyotes American Hockey League affiliate team, the Portland Pirates, scoring 25 goals and 23 assists in 63 played games.
