Second-year Arizona Cardinals cornerback Marco Wilson won the NFC Defensive Player of the Week honor after he contributed a pick-six and more in a Thursday win against the New Orleans Saints, it was announced by the NFL on Wednesday.
Wilson finished the game with three tackles, two passes defensed and his first career touchdown and interception each.
He had competition to win the award from his own teammate, with star backer Isaiah Simmons posting five tackles and one pick-six himself in the 42-34 win.
Wilson is the 35th Cardinals player to win a player of the week honor in franchise history.
The nod to Wilson is a step in the right direction for the second-year cornerback who was a fourth-round pick by Arizona a year ago.
In training camp, he had appeared to lose a starting role to veteran Antonio Hamilton. After Hamilton suffered a serious burn that put him on the injured reserve to begin the year, Wilson was leaned on more than expected and has been listed as a starter in six of the first seven games of the season.
Against New Orleans, he played the lowest percentage of the available snaps of the season (78%).
