The Arizona Diamondbacks reinstated five players off the 60-day injured list and then designated two of those players for assignment on Thursday.
The D-backs reinstated shortstop Nick Ahmed (right shoulder inflammation), corner infielder Emmanuel Rivera (fractured left wrist), right-handed pitchers Humberto Castellanos (strained right elbow) and Tyler Zuber (right shoulder impingement syndrome) and left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert (sprained left elbow) from the IL.
Arizona then DFA’d Castellanos and Zuber to bring the 40-man roster to 40.
On Friday, the D-backs outrighted one more player, infielder Buddy Kennedy to put the 40-man roster at 39.
It was a tough 2022 for the 32-year-old Ahmed after he was shut down at the end of spring training because of the right shoulder injury before returning to the D-backs’ lineup in April.
The shortstop slashed .231/.259/.442 to go along with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBI and two walks in 17 games (54 plate appearances) prior to going on the IL for the rest of the year in May.
Rivera, 26, joined the Diamondbacks on Aug. 1 in the trade that saw Arizona send righty Luke Weaver to the Kansas City Royals.
In 39 games in a D-backs uniform (132 at-bats), he slashed .227/.304/.424 (.728 OPS) with six home runs, eight doubles and 18 RBIs to go along with 12 walks and one stolen base.
Castellanos served as a backend rotation starter for Arizona until Tommy John Surgery sidelined him for the rest of the year in June.
The 24-year-old pitcher went 3-2 in 11 appearances (nine starts) with a 5.68 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 32 strikeouts across 44.1 innings pitched.
Gilbert spent time with both the Diamondbacks and Triple-A Reno Aces in 2022.
In eight games (seven starts) the 28-year-old southpaw was 0-3 in with a 5.24 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 20 Ks in 34.1 IP.
Zuber, 27, was claimed by the D-backs off waivers from the Royals on Oct. 26.
Kennedy made his MLB debut this season, playing in 30 games and making 94 plate appearances. The 23-year-old hit .217 and had a .613 OPS. He spent the majority of his season in Triple-A, appearing in 93 contests.
