Arizona Wildcats football extends head coach Jedd Fisch through 2027

Dec 1, 2022, 3:21 PM

The University of Arizona announced on Thursday it has extended head football coach Jedd Fisch through the 2027 season.

“Coach Fisch has brought a new level of energy and excitement to Arizona football, for our student-athletes and for our fans,” University of Arizona president Dr. Robert C. Robbins said in a release. “With a top-20 recruiting class this past year, an outstanding season, and the kind of integrity and dedication we value at the University of Arizona, he has earned this vote of confidence and I am excited for the bright future he is building for this program.”

Fisch originally signed on to join the Wildcats in December 2020 on a five-year contract that would have gone to the end of the 2025 season, meaning it is a two-year extension for Fisch.

“Amber and I, along with our family, are so grateful to President Robbins, Dave Heeke, and the entire University Leadership for their belief in our program and the direction we are heading,” Fisch said in a release. “This new contract will allow us to continue to build and improve in all areas. This would not be possible without the incredible efforts of our players and coaches, to whom I am incredibly grateful.

“I am excited about the improvements our program has made, but we can’t wait to get back on the recruiting trail and bring in more great players to take our program to greater heights. I want to thank Wildcat Nation for its support. Now it’s time to fill the stadium! Bear Down and Go Cats.”

After Arizona won a total of two games in 14 tries for the last two years of the Kevin Sumlin era, Fisch has done well in building back up a foundation for the football program.

While it is naturally going to take some time, as the Wildcats went 1-11 last year, they progressed to a 5-7 record for 2022.

Fisch has been an impressive recruiter considering the state of the program he inherited and how long his stay has been in Tucson. His 2022 recruiting class ranked third in the Pac-12 and 22nd overall on 247Sports’ rankings.

That class included some instant contributors. Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan was one of the best true freshmen in the country with 39 catches for 702 yards and eight touchdowns. Running back Jonah Coleman carried the ball 75 times for 372 yards and four touchdowns while interior offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea was a standout as well. McMillan and Savaiinaea made Pro Football Focus’ All-True Freshman Team.

For 2023, Fisch’s class sits at sixth in the Pac-12 and 41st overall.
