The Los Angeles Rams have reportedly claimed quarterback Baker Mayfield off waivers, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The move comes after the QB requested to be released from the Carolina Panthers following a turbulent season for both the team and No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Multiple teams have injured starting quarterbacks at present, including San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo and Rams signal caller Matt Stafford.
And with the Niners already having lost QB Trey Lance for the season and Garoppolo’s broken foot reportedly keeping him sidelined for 7-8 weeks, San Francisco’s 8-4 season and first-place spot in the NFC West now lies in the hands of a rookie.
That first-year quarterback is Gilbert native and Perry High School graduate Brock Purdy, who was Mr. Irrelevant as the No. 262 pick in this year’s draft.
Meanwhile, Stafford could reportedly miss the rest of the season due to a spinal cord contusion and backup John Wolford has been banged up as well.
So one can decide on their own if the Rams claimed Mayfield for their own needs or to slight their division rival from signing a quarterback who has won a playoff game with five weeks remaining in the regular season.
Or both.
“There is a shot” Mayfield plays on Thursday Night Football against the Las Vegas Raiders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Schefter added that the 49ers did not put in a waiver claim for Mayfield.
