Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is expected set to undergo knee surgery after Christmas, head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Wednesday.

Murray went down during a run in the first quarter of Monday’s game against the New England Patriots and was carted off the field. Kingsbury later confirmed that he tore his ACL.

The injury not only ends his 2022 season but potentially impacts 2023 depending on the speed of his recovery.

Kingsbury said Murray will do prehab workouts before his surgery, which can help retain muscle strength around the ACL and range of motion while controlling swelling, according to Emory Health. It typically takes 6-9 months to return to sports after ACL surgery, according to multiple health services, so the Cardinals are not wasting much time to get their franchise quarterback treated.

“I think everybody responds differently, but the type of athlete he is, his age, I wouldn’t put anything past him,” Kingsbury said. “We’ll have to see how he progresses throughout the whole process.”

Kingsbury said he has not spoken to Murray since Monday.

Colt McCoy took over for Murray on Monday, as he did for two games when Murray dealt with a hamstring injury earlier this season.

He remains under contract through 2023.

Arizona signed quarterback David Blough off the Minnesota Vikings practice squad on Wednesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That completes a quarterback room with McCoy, Trace McSorley and practice squad quarterback Carson Strong, who reportedly agreed to sign with the Cardinals on Tuesday.

On the other side of the ball, Kingsbury said defensive end Zach Allen underwent hand surgery on Wednesday after exiting Monday’s game.

Kingsbury did not commit to whether or not Allen would play again this season, but he noted the fourth-year pro will be out this week when the Cardinals take on the Denver Broncos on the road.
