Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray suffered a clean ACL tear with no damage to other ligaments in his knee, according to multiple reports early Sunday morning.

Murray was carted off the field in tears on Monday night against the New England Patriots after going down with a non-contact injury at the end of a run in the first quarter.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed the franchise quarterback suffered a torn ACL, and surgery will commence after Christmas.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Murray also has a torn meniscus, which will be repaired to stabilize the knee.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Murray has a chance to be ready to start the 2023 season next fall, as the Cardinals would “ramp him up” during the preseason.

Recovery time varies but typically takes 8-9 months for a torn ACL after surgery, possibly longer to limit risk of re-injury, according to UC Health.

“I think everybody responds differently,” Kingsbury told reporters. “You know the type of athlete he is, his age, I wouldn’t put anything past him. I think that’s something we’ll have to see how he progresses throughout that whole process.”

Rapoport and Schefter said the Cardinals will likely place Murray on the physically unable to perform list to start training camp as they evaluate where he stands in rehab.

If Arizona would keep Murray on the PUP list to start the regular season, he would miss at least four games.

In the meantime, Colt McCoy will start for the Cardinals Sunday against the Denver Broncos, and Murray will go through prehab workouts ahead of surgery.
