Cardinals quarterback McCoy out vs. Buccaneers, McSorley to start

Dec 21, 2022, 12:58 PM | Updated: 1:02 pm

The Arizona Cardinals will be down to their third string quarterback against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday as Colt McCoy has been ruled out with a concussion.

McCoy suffered the head injury on a third-down run in the third quarter against the Denver Broncos on Sunday and was carted off the field. The Cardinals lost the game 24-15, getting outscored 21-9 after McCoy left.

He entered concussion protocol after and was considered day-to-day before head coach Kliff Kingsbury ruled him out on Tuesday.

This leaves Arizona with third string quarterback Trace McSorley and David Blough as his backup. The Cardinals also signed James Morgan as a practice squad option at the position.

McSorley has appeared in seven NFL games since being drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Baltimore Ravens.

He has one touchdown pass and three interceptions to go with 256 career passing yards. He also has 52 yards on 11 rushing attempts.

Sunday will mark McSorley’s first career start in the NFL.

The Cardinals take on the Buccaneers, who have the NFL’s sixth-best passing defense in the league, allowing only 194.5 yards per game.

Arizona was already without starting quarterback Kyler Murray, who has been ruled out for the season with an ACL tear.

McCoy is on the first year of a two-year contract worth $7.5 million.

He is in his 12th season in the NFL and has played in 12 games for the Cardinals over the last two seasons.
