The Arizona Diamondbacks continue to add pieces to their roster for the 2023 season.

The D-backs have signed veteran third baseman Evan Longoria to a one-year contract, according to multiple reports.

And per AZCentral’s Nick Piercoro, the deal is for $4 million with the chance to earn an additional $1 million in incentives. This is a low-risk move with potentially high reward for Arizona.

Last season, Longoria hit .244 with 14 home runs and 42 RBIs in 89 games for the San Francisco Giants.

But what role will he play for the Snakes in 2023?

The Diamondbacks have been focused on acquiring right-handed hitting bats this off-season.

They’ve already traded for guys like Kyle Lewis, Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Now they add Longoria to that mix. Against left-handed pitching, Longoria hit .282 with six home runs and 22 RBI in 117 at-bats last season.

But outside of playing some third base and hitting against lefties, Longoria’s biggest impact for the 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks may not even occur on the field.

In the latest episode of The Ain’t No Fang, an Arizona Sports podcast, Cody Fincher and Steve Zinsmeister discuss Longoria’s potential role and hand out some offseason grades for the D-backs.
