Matt Korcheck was known for his physical play on the University of Arizona basketball team and now he moves on to a sport that is much more fitting to his style.

The Carlton Football Club of the Australia Football League signed Korcheck to a two-year contract after a month-long trial run.

According to an interview with the club, Korcheck received an email invite to a screening camp in Florida back in April.

“At first I was like, ‘what is this?’ But then I figured out it was a pretty good opportunity so I went for it,” Korcheck told the club’s website.

Korcheck, 23, spent three years playing basketball for the Arizona Wildcats. Primarily used as an inside presence on rare occasions, Korcheck averaged only 3.7 minutes per game in his senior season.

“It’s an easy game to fall in love with,” Korcheck said about Australian rules football.

“I love the physicality of the sport, the conditioning and just how hard the players have to push themselves.”

Korcheck had no knowledge of the game prior to this year. According to the Arizona Daily Star, he will move to Australia in October and then most likely spend the next season with Carlton’s developmental affiliate.
