Diamondbacks first base prospect Deyvison De Los Santos is another step closer to the major leagues.
Arizona promoted De Los Santos to Triple-A Reno from Double-A Amarillo on Tuesday, and the Aces placed the power-hitting infielder in the five-hole for his first game. He nearly went yard in his second at-bat with a 108 mph fly ball to the wall.
The Diamondbacks lost De Los Santos in the Rule 5 Draft over the offseason to the Cleveland Guardians, but the 20-year-old missed the cut for Opening Day and returned to Arizona.
Since then, he has been the top slugger in not only the Texas League but all of Double-A. De Los Santos tore through Double-A pitching with a level-high 1.122 OPS and 14 home runs in 38 games.
Farm director Shaun Larkin said after De Los Santos won Texas League Player of the Month for April the key to his eventual promotion will be improvement as a well-rounded player.
“Making sure we’re sustainable,” Larkin said on May 3. “We can’t just get wrapped up in the offensive numbers when we value as an organization, especially at the major league level, the complete player. So that will be his development path.”
He has power to all fields and is working on improving his first base defense after a move from third.
This has been a positive prospect story for a Diamondbacks system that has faced so much injury adversity throughout the season.
Four of Arizona’s top five prospects ranked by MLB Pipeline have been on the MiLB injured list for extended periods: shortstop Jordan Lawlar (60-day since March 28), shortstop Tommy Troy (7-day since April 26), pitcher Yu-Min Lin (7-day since April 27) and infielder Gino Groover (60-day since April 11).

Diamondbacks sign Matt Beaty
Arizona assigned former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder/first baseman Matt Beaty to Double-A Amarillo, per the MiLB transactions page. Beaty, 31, played 240 games for the Dodgers from 2019-21 and produced a .758 OPS before getting traded to the San Diego Padres. Since then, he has played in 50 major league games between the Padres, Giants and Royals with a .518 OPS. He will be a first base option for the Sod Poodles without De Los Santos.
Corner infield prospect Ivan Melendez got the start there on Tuesday and has played a lot of third base.
