Gosselin provides jolt, D-backs edge out Rockies in first game of doubleheader: By the Numbers

There’s nothing quite like a win to purge the fresh taste of a loss from your mouth.  In Tuesday’s 6-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, the Arizona Diamondbacks did just that, setting themselves up to take a 2-1 lead in the current series entering the tail end of the day’s doubleheader.

D-backs catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia would get Arizona on the board first in the second inning, belting a solo homer that would give the D-backs an early 1-0 lead.

Arizona starting pitcher Patrick Corbin would quickly surrender a run of his own in the home half of the second after Rockies second baseman DJ LeMahieu deposited a titanic solo shot over the center field wall.  Though he’d cede another run in the fifth to Rockies left fielder Kyle Parker, Corbin would settle down, scattering seven hits over 6.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs and striking out four en route to his fourth victory of the season.

On offense, the player of the game for the D-backs was second baseman Phil Gosselin, who provided some momentum in the third inning with an RBI double before blasting a three-run home run in the seventh to give Arizona a commanding 6-2 at the time.

Though the D-backs bullpen would give up a run in each of the eighth and ninth innings, the threat from Colorado was fleeting, as Arizona would go on to notch their 64th win of the season.

4 (Part I)

After going 0-for-4 in his debut with the team on Monday, Gosselin rebounded well in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader with the Rockies, batting 2-for-3 and driving in four RBI, three which came on his mammoth seventh inning home run.

4 (Part II)

While Gosselin enjoyed a breakout game Tuesday, D-backs third baseman Brandon Drury experienced no such joy.  Called up from Triple-A Reno just prior to the day’s action, Drury went 0-for-4 in his big league debut.  Between stints at Reno and Double-A Mobile, Drury hit .303 with 40 doubles, five home runs and 61 RBI in 130 combined games.

D-backs right fielder Ender Inciarte is wielding a rather hot bat of late.  Following his 2-for-4 effort with a double and a stolen base, in his last 14 games, Inciarte is batting .357 (20-for-56) with four doubles, one home run, eight RBI and eight walks.

D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is still one walk shy of setting the franchise’s all-time record for walks in a single-season.  “Goldy” is currently tied at 100 with Luis Gonzalez’s mark in 2001.

While is wasn’t the greatest of days for Goldschmidt, who hit into a triple play in the eighth inning, it wasn’t all bad either, as “America’s First Baseman” reached base for the 31st straight time versus the Rockies Tuesday.  Goldschmidt finished the day 1-for-5 with two strikeouts

The D-backs have now totaled 10 or more hits in 12 of 14 games versus the Rockies this season.  They’ve also produced 15 home runs and 93 runs scored for the season series.
