TEMPE — Arizona State football reaped the benefits of Sam Leavitt’s elite improvisation as the Sun Devils knotted it up with Utah, 6-6, late in the first quarter on Friday at Mountain America Stadium.
The quarterback had three key scrambles on the drive, all on third or fourth downs with heavy pressure.
He scrambled to throw on an early third-and-5 and found Xavier Guillory, who shed a tough tackle for a gain of 27 yards.
After a false start put ASU in a third-and-9, Leavitt scrambled to the right and reached for a first down.
Most impressive of all, however, was a fourth down ASU kept its offense out on the field from the Utah 35-yard line. The pressure came and the quarterback spun out to his left, still looking downfield before seeing green grass in front of him and getting the first himself.
Leavitt found his favorite receiver, Jordyn Tyson, for a touchdown on the next play.
Arizona State football picked up where it left off last week, as QB Sam Leavitt once again found Jordyn Tyson. This time, the connection was a 26-yard TD to tie No. 16 Utah in the first quarter.
