The Arizona Cardinals cut 19 players on Saturday, trimming the roster to the 53-man limit.

Among the cuts were both quarterbacks battling for the third-string quarterback job, Logan Thomas and Phillip Sims, who became victims of the trade that sent a conditional seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Matt Barkley. Thomas, a fourth-round pick in 2014, looked as if he had nailed down the third-string quarterback job before the trade.

“It’s the toughest day in the NFL,” head coach Bruce Arians said Friday, purposefully dressed in a black shirt and hat.

Other notable players cut included running back Kerwynn Williams, veteran defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, and receiver Jaxon Shipley, who had a strong preseason.

Williams became a key contributor in three games last year, rushing for 67 yards in a loss at San Francisco, 75 during a win at St. Louis and 100 in a win over the Chiefs.

Shaughnessy played in all 16 games for the Cardinals in 2013 and recorded 17 tackles in eight games last season.

The cut players are not necessarily done with the Cardinals. It is possible some could come back as part of the 10-player practice squad.

“If they were to clear waivers, we’d like to have some back on the practice squad,” Arians said Friday. “Some are going to get claimed because they’ve got good enough tape out there, and congratulate them for that. If I didn’t get a chance to talk to them, congratulate them for it.”

The Cardinals had until 1 p.m. Saturday to trim their roster to 53 players.

Additionally, the Cardinals announced that 2015 seventh-round pick and tight end Gerald Christian (knee), former ASU running back Marion Grice (shoulder) and corner Jimmy Legree (calf) were placed on the injured reserve list.

The entire list of players the team parted with Saturday is below:

Tackle Cameron Bradfield
Cornerback Cariel Brooks
Cornerback Jonte Green
Guard Jon Halapio
Wide receiver Trevor Harman
Running back Robert Hughes
Safety Harold Jones-Quartey
Running back Paul Lasike
Linebacker Gave Martin
Guard Antoine McClain
Cornerback C.J. Roberts
Defensive end Matt Shaughnessy
Wide receiver Jaxon Shipley
Quarterback Phillip Sims
Guard/Center Anthony Steen
Nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu
