On the heels of a 14-5 walloping at the hands of the Chicago Cubs Friday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks were shutdown completely Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field, as Cubs starter Jake Arrieta allowed only four hits over eight innings of work to hand the D-backs their second straight loss in the series.

Opposing Arrieta on the mound for Arizona was rookie lefty Robbie Ray, who posted a respectable start of his own but was once again victimized by a stunning lack of run support.  The marginal difference in the game came in the fourth and fifth innings, when the Cubs broke the scoreless tie in the fourth on a David Ross ground out to second base allowing Anthony Rizzo to score before a Dexter Fowler solo homer increased the Chicago lead to 2-0 in the fifth.

Below, we take a look at the D-backs’ loss, by the numbers.

8

Though he’d leave the game with his team in a 2-0 hole after five innings of work, Ray did tie a career-high with eight strikeouts versus the Cubs Saturday.  It also marked the fifth time in the last six outings for Ray that he’s allowed three runs or less.

The total numbers of runs Ray has received from the D-backs lineup over his last seven games.

24

More Ray: The 23-year-old saw his consecutive innings streak of not allowing a home run end at 24 after Fowler belted a solo home run to left field to give Chicago a 2-0 lead in the fifth.

12

D-backs left fielder David Peralta has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games after finishing the day’s game 1-for-3 with a stolen base.  Over that span, Peralta is batting .387 (19-for-49) with one double, one triple, two home runs and seven RBI.

2-for-4

In his first game back after traveling back home to witness the birth of his first child, D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was Arizona’s most productive player at the plate Saturday, finishing the game 2-for-4 with two strikeouts.

11

D-backs reliever Randall Delgado has provided quality play in late-inning relief for Arizona, holding opponents scoreless in 11 of his last 12 relief outings.
