McWilliams, 20, was rated by MLB.com as the 28th best prospect in the Phillies organization. The right-hander was an eighth round selection for Philadelphia in the 2014 draft, and went 0-2 with a 3.27 ERA in seven starts for the Phillies’ rookie level team.
“Sam follows along the lines of what we’ve been doing for the last year, acquiring young power arms,” said D-backs Sr. Vice President and General Manger, Dave Stewart. “He’s a high school draft pick that put up good numbers in the Gulf Coast League. He’ll be a great addition to our organization.”
Hellickson, 28, went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA in 27 starts for the D-backs this past year in his lone season for Arizona. The Diamondbacks acquired Hellickson a year ago from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Andrew Velazquez and Justin Williams.
In six years in the major leagues, Hillickson is 49-48 with a 3.94 ERA.
Gambadoro said that Hellickson would have likely been non tendered, so getting something for him is a plus.
