Both Arizona State and the University of Arizona earned a much-needed win Sunday, with the Sun Devils knocking off the Washington Huskies and the Wildcats beating No. 10 Utah.
ASU improved to 5-5 (3-4 in Pac-12) with their 27-17 victory while UA moved to 6-5 (3-5) with their 37-30 2OT win. Each school received outstanding efforts from all over their roster, and each saw one of its players earn a Pac-12 Player of the Week honor Monday.
For the Devils, linebacker Antonio Longino got the nod for defense, while Wildcats kicker Casey Skowron earned the honor for special teams.
Longino, a senior, finished with seven tackles — four of which were for loss — along with two sacks and one pass break up.
After the game Longino, who was iffy to play at all due to a hamstring injury, said, “My team needed me. Just to pick them up on and off the field, that’s what I came out there to do.”
Skowron, also a senior, made all four of his PATs and was a perfect three-for-three on field goals, connecting from 47, 40 and 35-yards out. His final field goal of the night forced a second overtime, where the Wildcats ultimately prevailed.
Longino is the third Sun Devil to earn a conference Player of the Week award this season, as QB Mike Bercovici and punter Matt Haack took home honors on Oct. 5 for his performances in a win over UCLA. Skowron is the first Wildcat to be named this season.
Arizona State and Arizona will battle this Saturday in the annual Territorial Cup, with this year’s edition taking place in Tempe. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and the game can be heard on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.
