Arizona Sports Face-Off: All-Star Games

Feb 24, 2012, 6:42 PM | Updated: Apr 9, 2012, 10:32 pm

The NBA All-Star Game is coming up, with the game’s
stars set to take the court in Orlando to showcase the
game of basketball. Excited?

Not everyone is, so it got us to thinking: Which league
has the best All-Star Game? That is the question for this
week’s Arizona Sports Face Off.

Vince Marotta:
MLB
Adam
Green: NBA
I realize All-Star
games in every sport are about presentation and
entertainment more than they’re about being real
representations of the sport. But why can’t you have the
best of both worlds?

That’s why, beyond the shadow of a doubt, the Major League
Baseball All-Star Game is far and away the best pro sports
All-Star spectacle.

Players are honored to be there, and it’s a real baseball
game with no real difference in the rules. Pitchers don’t
tone down their 100 MPH fastballs to 80 MPH because it’s
the All-Star Game. Everybody in the NBA’s version tones
down their defense to half speed, if that.

And Adam, why shouldn’t the members of the Pirates and
Royals who are participating have a chance to impact the
game? They impact the course of the pennant race over the
course of 162 games, don’t they?

The best part about All-Star games is
the fact that they are not meant to be taken seriously,
and no game does this better than the NBA’s.

The best players run up and down the court, throwing down
monster dunks. No defense, no problem. Give me high-
flyers doing what they do best: flying high.

If you want the game’s best, MLB is the wrong way to go.
Every team MUST have a player in the game, whether they
are a true All-Star or not. And then making the game
determine homefield advantage in the World Series?
Honestly, does a Kansas City Royal deserve to have any say
in who hosts the World Series? What about a Pittsburgh
Pirate? Come on.

So Vince and anyone else who wrongly takes his side, go
enjoy your 3-2 snoozefest, with as many groundouts and
flyouts as base hits. I’ll take my All Stars
actually looking like All Stars, thank you very much.
