ASU’s Deven Marrero signs with Red Sox

Jun 18, 2012, 10:35 PM | Updated: 11:42 pm

Just a week after being drafted 14th overall by the Boston
Red Sox in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft, former
ASU shortstop Deven Marrero has signed with the club.

According to Baseball America’s Jim Callis, Marrero did
pretty well in the financial department by putting pen to
paper, too:

In his three years at Arizona State, Marrero played in 150
games, batting .325 with 12 home runs and 95 runs batted
in.

But Marrero was highly-coveted for his glove, which earned
him Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors following
his sophomore season in 2011.

In a blog post on ESPN Boston, Gordon Edes
quotes Marrero’s Cape Cod League coach Mike Roberts, who
offered a glowing endorsement of Marrero’s defensive skill
set.

He’s the best amateur baseball player on the
defensive side I’ve ever seen in 35 years of coaching.
He’s Omar Vizquel at 20, 21, except he’ll be a better
hitter and steal more bases. I’ve seen him do things
defensively I’ve never seen another infielder do.
