TEMPE — The Arizona State Baseball team is saying goodbye to Packard Stadium.
The Arizona Board of Regents has approved Arizona State University’s lease with the City of Phoenix that will have the team move to Phoenix Municipal Stadium in 2015.
“The anticipation would be that we would move the ASU baseball program to that location,” ASU Executive Vice President Morgan Olsen told the regents at their meeting in Tempe today. “The term of the lease is 25 years, and we commence that lease as soon as the Oakland A’s vacate their tenancy there.”
Olsen said that the University will have full control of the stadium and would have baseball administrative offices and support facilities, in addition to the team playing their home games there. The school would also operate the stadium for any other events that are hosted at the facility.
The A’s are expected to move to Hohokam Park in Mesa once the Chicago Cubs move to their new Cactus League stadium near Mesa Riverview.
Arizona State baseball has called Packard Stadium home since 1974.
