Hockey team’s ‘Teddy Bear Toss’ offers a fun way to donate

Dec 7, 2015, 8:00 PM

The Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League have one of the coolest traditions you will ever see.

In one December game every season, the team asks fans to bring teddy bears and, upon the home team’s first goal of the night, they are asked to then toss said teddy bears onto the ice.

The goal is to collect as many bears as possible that can be donated to children who are less fortunate.

Suffice to say, they collected plenty of bears in this year’s game, which was Sunday.

Fans had to bide their time a little as the Hitmen failed to light the lamp until the second period, when Jordy Stollard pushed the puck into the back of the net. From there it was raining bears.

According to CBSSports.com, the Hitmen are not the only team to put on an event like this. The Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League also do it, though theirs understandably has a tough time comparing to the one in Calgary, which brought an outstanding 28,815 bears.
