University of Arizona’s athletics department announced Friday that baseball coach Andy Lopez had been scheduled for triple bypass surgery Monday in a Tucson hospital.
The 59-year-old coach is in stable condition according to the university, which added that he was expected to make a full recovery, returning to coaching with the clearance of doctors.
Lopez has coached the Wildcats for 13 seasons, leading them to eight postseason berths, a pair of College World Series appearances and a national championship, captured in 2012. He has coached collegiate baseball for 31 years and he has a 437-267-1 record with Arizona.
The school’s vice president for athletics, Greg Byrne, added well wishes to Friday’s announcement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy and his family.”
