Shane Doan scores two goals in :14 in Coyotes’ win over Toronto

You wouldn’t think a 3-2 hockey game would necessarily feature an offensive outburst at any point.

That’s exactly what happened, however, in the Arizona Coyotes’ win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday night at Gila River Arena in Glendale.

The two teams combined to light the lamp three times in a span of 21 seconds in the first period. Toronto’s James Van Riemsdyk started the fun by scoring on a power-play wrist shot that beat Coyotes goalie Louie Domingue at the 15:09 mark. That gave Toronto a 1-0 lead.

To say that it was short-lived would not be doing it justice.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan scored :07 later when he collected a puck shot into the Toronto zone off the boards and beat Jonathan Bernier with a backhand to tie the score.

Exactly :07 later following a Maple Leafs’ turnover in their own zone, Doan took a pass from Kyle Chipchura, one-timed it off the post and then crammed home the rebound past Bernier for another goal and a 2-1 lead.

Imagine if you had left your seat to go grab a hot dog and missed that amazing 21-second span.

“Just try to hit it, that’s all you’re thinking,” Doan joked about his first goal. “It’s fortunate, you hit it hard and it hits the crossbar and goes in and then you try to claim you did it on purpose. That’s one you’re just trying to hit as it’s bouncing and it’s hard for a goalie to play that because you don’t really know where it’s going so he doesn’t know where it’s going.”

The multi-goal game was the first for Doan this season and first since Nov. 14, 2014, when he scored twice in a 6-5 road win over the Washington Capitals. It was the 47th multi-goal game of his career.

Doan also assisted on Connor Murphy’s eventual game-winning goal at 6:06 of the third period to give the ‘Yotes their second straight win.

“That was big. It wasn’t exactly the prettiest hockey game you’ve ever seen, but it was a win and (Coach Dave Tippett) was on us to find a win, and we found a way, so it was big,” Doan said.
