Every week as part of my show prep (and because I’m genuinely interested), I read through as many research notes I can find. Sometimes I research my own stats to see if there’s a statistical trend that backs up what I think I’m seeing when I watch games. Unfortunately for my time-efficiency, occasionally those stats show me nothing and I throw them out.
Here are the stats (or interesting tidbits) from the NFL’s divisional playoff round that I’m using on the show this week.
1) Only Hall of Fame WRs Jerry Rice (22) and John Stallworth (12) have more TD receptions in the postseason than Larry Fitzgerald. — Cards press release
2) The Cardinals are 5-0 all-time at home in the postseason with all five wins coming by seven points or fewer. — Cards press release
3) Each of the last two Cardinals’ postseason home games were against Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers, went into overtime, and ended on the third play from scrimmage after regulation. — ESPN Stats & Info
4) Fitzgerald is the only player in NFL history with at least three games of 150+ receiving yards in the playoffs. — Cards press release
5) 2016 is the fourth straight year the NFC Championship Game has at least one representative from the NFC West. — Cards press release
6) Saturday was only the second time in Larry Fitzgerald’s career he ran for at least 100 yards after the catch. — ESPN Stats & Info
7) Once the Carolina game starts, the Cardinals will have played in more playoff games with Michael Bidwill as president than they did in the previous 73 years without him. — Cards press release
8) Before 2009, the Cardinals had never played in a postseason overtime game, but now no NFL team has more postseason overtime wins than Arizona. — Cards press release
9) The Cardinals and Packers scored 23 points combined in the first 56:15 and another 23 points in the final 4:49. — Cards press release
10) Only Jerry Rice (8) and Michael Irvin (6) have more 100-yard receiving games in the postseason than Larry Fitzgerald’s five. — Cards press release
11) Dwight Freeney has 9.0 sacks in 12 games since joining the Cardinals. — Cards press release
12) Green Bay and Arizona each averaged exactly 5.8 yards per play on offense and the final time of possession was 30:51 to 30:14 in favor of Arizona. — Cards press release
13) Larry Fitzgerald’s 176 receiving yards represent a new franchise postseason record surpassing his own franchise record of 166 yards at Carolina (1/10/09) in the 2008 Divisional round. — Cards press release
14) Fitzgerald now has more receiving yards (912) than any player in NFL history through his first eight career postseason games. — Cards press release
15) Fitzgerald’s 10 postseason TD receptions are the most in NFL history for a player in his first eight postseason games. — Cards press release
