Ender Inciarte fuels D-backs’ series-opening win over Padres: By the Numbers

Playing in their first road game of the year Monday, the Arizona Diamondbacks looked downright comfortable at Petco Park in San Diego.

Arizona had a big second inning against starter Andrew Cashner, and later tacked on a few more runs, although the Padres generated some offense of their own.

The Diamondbacks reached a new season high in runs as they won by a final of 8-4, improving to 4-3 on the season. San Diego’s three-game winning streak came to an end, and the Padres fell to 4-4.

The two team will square off against each other two more times at Petco, with Jeremy Hellickson and Odrisamer Despaigne expected to start on the hill Tuesday night.

Here’s a look at the D-backs’ series-opening victory, by the numbers:

D-backs catcher Tuffy Gosewisch only went 1-for-5 in the contest, but he scored two times and drove in his first run of the season — just the 11th of his career. The 31-year-old right-handed hitter is batting .217 on the season.

Two Diamondbacks stole a bag in the win: Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb. It was Goldschmidt’s second of the year, while Lamb recorded his first of the season — and just the second of his career. Goldschmidt went 1-for-3 in the game with one RBI, two walks and one strikeout. Lamb went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, one walk and two strikeouts, improving his batting average to .400.

Rubby De La Rosa wasn’t perfect on the mound for Arizona, but he notched a quality start and improved to 2-0 on the season. The right-handed hurler threw 101 pitches in six innings, surrendering six hits and three earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts. The 26-year-old Dominican’s ERA, however, is still 7.15 after two starts with the D-backs.

Four pitchers took the hill Monday for San Diego, and the D-backs reached home on the first three of them. Four runs were scored on Cashner in the second inning, although none were earned. The 28-year-old right-hander fell to 0-2 on the season, allowing seven hits in six innings while walking one and striking out nine. Frank Garces tossed the final 1.1 innings and was the only Padres pitcher to not give up a run or a hit.

Ender Inciarte started in center field and was the player of the game for Arizona, tallying two doubles and a triple in five at-bats with two runs scored and a career-high four RBI. He now has three doubles and six RBI on the season with a .393 average. Also worth noting is he has now doubled in five straight games against the Padres, tying Stephen Drew for the team record; only former Colorado first baseman Todd Helton has ever had a longer doubles streak — six games — against San Diego. The 24-year-old Inciarte also threw out Matt Kemp at third in the eighth inning, helping to quiet a Padres mini-run.

Seven D-backs position players recorded a hit in the game, with four of them — Inciarte, Lamb, David Peralta and Mark Trumbo — getting more than one. Aaron Hill was the only D-backs starter to not get a hit (0-for-5). The Diamondbacks finished with 12 hits, while the Padres had nine.

Evan Marshall is one of the few D-backs relievers to be off to a rough start this season. The 24-year-old right hander gave up four hits and two runs in an inning-plus of work last Wednesday against San Francisco, and the Padres touched him up for three hits and an earned run in the eighth inning Monday. Marshall’s ERA remained 9.00 after the inning of work.

Not only did the Diamondbacks win their first road game of the season, but they improved to 13-7 against San Diego over the last two years; the Padres were one of the few teams Arizona had success against in 2014. Back in 2013, the D-backs went just 7-12 against the Southern California club.
