Despite shooting 47.1 percent from the free throw line, Grand Canyon University’s men’s basketball team defeated South Carolina State 78-74 Monday night to claim its first Division I postseason victory.

The Lopes made up for the atrocious free throw shooting by sinking eight of their first 11 three-point attempts. GCU held a 44-32 lead at the end of the first half.

GCU cooled off considerably in the second half, shooting just 38.5 percent. South Carolina State clawed back, cutting the GCU lead to one with four seconds left. Sophomore guard Joshua Braun clinched the GCU victory with a pair of free throws to end the game. Braun led GCU in scoring with 16 points.

The Lopes advance to the second round and play host to the Jackson State Tigers.
