The idea that the Arizona Cardinals’ secondary would have a different look in 2016 was well understood, as many key players were free agents and not all were likely to return.

It took a while, but we now know at least one member will not be back.

New chapter, same grind. I’M COMING HOME!! #TITANUP #GODWINS

A third-round pick out of Alabama in 2009, Johnson tied for the team lead with five interceptions last season. He also tallied 59 total tackles, eight passes defended and one fumble recovery while adding another five tackles on special teams.

Long regarded as one of the most intelligent players on the team, Johnson was a leader of a secondary that was one of the team’s strengths.

Johnson missed two games in 2015 with an ankle injury but returned for Arizona’s Week 17 matchup with Seattle as well as both playoff games.

In 2013, Johnson’s season (and career) took an odd turn when he lost the end of his middle finger while attempting a special teams tackle against the Saints in Week 3. He was back on the field three games later.

Over seven seasons with the Cardinals, Johnson intercepted 15 passes, collected one sack, forced one fumble and had four fumble recoveries.
