Spring training is beginning to wind down and MLB players are starting to prepare for their 162-game marathon of a season.
Teams have different ways of doing this, and for some members of the Los Angeles of Anaheim Angels, that’s pulling a prank on teammate Garrett Richards.
The YouTube channel PrankvsPrank were approached to do a prank with Mike Trout, and when Trout was asked who to play a joke on, “he immediately thought of Garrett Richards, his roommate and good friend” according to MLB.com.
At the Japenese restaurant Sapporo in Scottsdale, Richards, Mike Trout, Jered Weaver, Kole Calhoun and C.J. Cron were waiting to be seated at their table.
The prank was a woman coming to the Angels’ players table and saying that she wanted to break up with her boyfriend who, as it turns out, wanted Richards’ help to propose to the woman.
Richards was the only one in the group not in on the prank, but luckily for the video, he was the one giving the most advice to the woman.
Richards went on to say “just give it to him straight” and “just be like, dude, it’s not working out.”
“I think it’s like a bandaid,” Richards said in the video. “You just gotta rip it off.”
The layout of the restaurant had Richards going in blind when he brought the ring to the table, and he realizes the mistake he has made as soon as he sees the woman.
To Richards’ credit, he stays with them through the fake argument and even tells the boyfriend that she planned to break it off.
That’s when Trout and his teammates reveal the gag, catching Richards in a mix of massive vulnerability and embarrassment.
“They got me good,” Richards told MLB.com. “I thought it was funny. I’m a pretty easygoing guy. I think they picked me because I’m the one guy who will probably just go with the flow. Whatever’s thrown at me, I’ll just adapt to it. But it was definitely surprising. I was shocked. I had no idea the whole time. At the end, I was really, really surprised.”
