A closer look at the Arizona Diamondbacks’ payroll

It probably will not come as much of a surprise given the contract the team handed pitcher Zack Greinke in the offseason, but of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ $98,664,783 payroll, the vast majority is being allocated to the starting rotation.
According to Spotrac.com, which does an excellent job of tracking salaries across sports, $43,746,00 is being spent on Greinke, Shelby Miller, Patrick Corbin, Rubby De La Rosa and Robbie Ray. Of course, $34 million of that total is going to Greinke alone, with Miller the next highest earner at $4.35 million. Corbin is slated to make $2.52 million, while De La Rosa will get $2.35 million and Ray $521,000.
After the starting rotation, the next highest allotment of money is allocated to the bullpen, with the seven-member crew earning $17,111,500. Newcomer Tyler Clippard makes the most at $6.1 million, with closer Brad Ziegler right behind him at $5.5 million.
When it comes to position players, Arizona’s infield is earning a combined $16,253,200. Appropriately, the highest paid player among the group is first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, though he is making just $5.85 million. Catcher Welington Castillo will earn $3.7 million while infielder Jean Segura will collect $2.6 million. No other infielder is slated to make more than $530,500, which is where Chris Owings sits.
The lowest-paid group on the team, Arizona’s outfielders account for $8,008,500, with Yasmany Tomas earning the bulk of that at $7.5 million.
A couple of players, most notably Rickie Weeks, Jr. and Owings make the position spending a bit tricky as both are listed as infielders but figure to see plenty of time in the outfield. The D-backs also have A.J. Pollock ($3.5 million) and Josh Collmenter ($1.85 million) currently on the disabled list.
Also adding to the D-backs’ total payroll is salaries being payed to players no longer with the team, as Aaron Hill will get $6.5 million, Cody Ross $1 million and Matt Reynolds $165,983.
In all, the D-backs’ entire payroll is the 22nd-highest in all of baseball and the lowest of all the NL West teams.
