The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired left-handed prospect Edwin Escobar off waivers Friday and optioned the minor-leaguer to Triple-A Reno.

The former Boston Red Sox pitcher has pitched seven innings through three games (1 start) with Triple-A Pawtucket without allowing an earned run. He recorded a 4.97 ERA (28 earned runs in 50.2 innings pitched) last season in minor league ball.

Escobar, 24, was a target of the Diamondbacks when the team acquired starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa from the Red Sox two years ago, manager Chip Hale said Friday before Arizona opened its series against the Colorado Rockies.

In a corresponding move Friday, the D-backs designated right-hand pitcher Matt Buschmann for assignment.

Escobar originally signed with the Texas Rangers in 2008 and was sent to San Francisco in a 2010 trade. After becoming the Giants’ No. 2-ranked prospect before the 2014 season, according to Baseball America, he was traded to Boston in the middle of the year.
