The month of April was not particularly kind to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

All-star center fielder A.J. Pollock fractured his right elbow in a preseason exhibition game and big-time offseason acquisitions Zack Greinke and Shelby Miller got off to less than ideal starts.

The D-backs’ 12-14 mark for the month prevented them from gaining an early foothold in the National League West. In fact, all five teams in the division finished April with sub-.500 records, so the D-backs are still in the thick of the race heading into the second month of the season.

Here is the D-backs’ April, by the numbers.

37

Jean Segura had a league-leading 37 hits in the month of April. Segura, an offseason acquisition from the Milwaukee Brewers, started hot and never really cooled down. He had two hits in an Opening Day loss to Colorado, the first of five straight multi-hit contests for the infielder. In all, Segura had 11 games with two hits or more, including a season-high four hits Apr. 25 in a 12-7 win over St. Louis.

8.69

Miller’s 8.69 ERA was his worst for a month in his career.

0

The number of quality starts for Miller in five outings. Last season, while a member of the Atlanta Braves, Miller had 21 quality starts in 33 appearances.

29

The D-backs turned 29 double plays, tied for the fourth-most in MLB.

6

Six D-backs had at least 10 RBI in the month, including outfielder Brandon Drury, who had three home runs and five RBI in his last four games in April.

.247

All-star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt hit .247. Since the start of the 2013 season, that is only the second month Goldschmidt has hit below .250.

25

Despite his batting average woes, Goldschmidt led the majors in walks with 25.

30

Arizona pitchers gave up 30 home runs.

7

Patrick Corbin’s seven home runs allowed is tied for the most in MLB.

5

The D-backs’ bullpen had five of the team’s 12 wins.

.429

Greinke’s .429 OBP was the highest of any pitcher in baseball with at least 10 at-bats.

6

Welington Castillo’s six home runs tied for the most by a catcher.

37

Arizona hit 37 home runs, tied with the Colorado Rockies for the most in the majors.

21

The D-backs used 21 pitchers total, including 16 different relievers.

5.50

Greinke had a 5.50 ERA in six starts. That’s his worst ERA in a month with at least five starts since June of 2011.

9

Greinke and Corbin combined for nine hits at the plate, the most of any pitching duo in the majors.
