Phoenix awarded 2014 WNBA All-Star Game
The WNBA All-Star Game is coming to Phoenix in 2014.
The 17-year-old league awarded the game to the Phoenix Mercury Wednesday. The game will be played at US Airways Center Saturday, July 19.
“We’re really excited,” Mercury vice president Ann Meyers-Drysdale said on The Dan Bickley Show with Vince Marotta on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Wednesday. “I’ve been with the league since ’97 and have really seen it grow.
“The first All-Star Game was in New York in ’99 and then we held it in 2000, and to have it come back 14 years later — I think it’s great for the city.”
Last year’s WNBA All-Star Game was played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. and was won by the West, 102-98. Mercury players Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner were both on the West squad, although Griner didn’t play due to an injury.
