Will ASU football have black uniforms in 2011?
No one will ever accuse us of being fashionistas here at ArizonaSports.com, but black may be the new maroon this fall, at least in Tempe.
The change in color preference has nothing to do with the thousands of fashion conscious young woman who walk around Arizona State University’s campus. As a matter of fact, it has nothing to do with woman at all. No, if a random tweet from senior wide receiver Gerell Robinson is to be believed, black may be the new maroon for the ASU football team when they take the field at Sun Devil Stadium this season.
“@TheNextGreat_8 First player to see them black jerseys.. Yezzir!!! #blackout”
The tweet has since been deleted and Robinson is claiming his account was hacked but that doesn’t necessarily mean the black jersey rumor isn’t true. Where there’s smoke a lot of time there’s fire and it’s not the first time rumors of a black jersey coming to ASU’s rotation has come up. During last season rumors emerged that the team may be looking into an alternate black jersey.
It was a rumor equipment manager Mark Zimmer addressed on the ASU pregame show last November.
“That’s a very common question that comes up every year,” Zimmer said. “We have seen some drawings and designs from Nike for a black uniform. I don’t think that’s too uncommon for a lot of schools. You are allowed an alternate uniform.
“I can’t tell you there won’t be black uniforms in the future, but understand that an extra uniform is not like going to the store and buying a pair of Levis. You’re talking a significant amount of money for another set of uniforms. Whether that be the jersey and the pants and, of course, the helmet has to match that if you’re going to do it right. It’s a significant cash outlay. We’re looking into it. We’re investigating it but when that will happen remains to be seen.”
Has the investigation ended? Will it happen this season? We don’t know, but it’s sure fun to speculate.
