Garth Gerhart named to Rimington watch list

May 25, 2011, 3:08 PM | Updated: 4:14 pm

ASU senior center Garth Gerhart has been named to the Rimington Trophy watch list which is annually awarded to the top center in NCAA Division I-A college football.

While Gerhart might be best known for being the younger brother of current Minnesota Viking running back Toby Gerhart, the history major has started 22 of 26 games since arriving in Tempe three years ago.

The 6-2, 295-pound center is one of only three returning starters in the Pacific-12 Conference and is the most experienced center in the league.

The Rimington Trophy, named after former Nebraska All-American Dave Rimington, has been around for 12 years and is a member of the National College Football Awards Association, which aims to preserve and enhance the integrity, influence and prestige of the game’s most coveted awards.

In order to determine the most outstanding center in college football the Rimington Trophy committee uses the American Football Coaches Association, Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of America.
