ESPN Insider: ASU needs a dynamic coach

Nov 30, 2011, 8:55 PM | Updated: 11:22 pm

The rumor mill is turning faster and faster as more names
come up for the head coaching position at ASU.

The vacant position is seen by many as one of the top head
coaching jobs in the country.

ESPN College football analyst Mark May says that Athletic
Director Lisa Love needs to make a statement with whoever
she hires next.

“They need to get a dynamic coach, they need a name
coach,” May said on Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and Gambo
Wednesday. “When you look at the situation for Arizona
State they’ve got to go in the right direction, they’ve
got to get the exact right person and if they foul this
one up it’s going to be a long time until you see
prosperity at Arizona State.”

May believes that the next head coach, if right, will be
able to break the cycle of bad football fans have endured
for quite some time, but if Love gets it wrong then it’s
her that should go.

“If you look at the demographics of the city you got six
million people, you’ve got great recruiting base, you got
a nationally known name, the athletic director in that
department they need to shake it up if not they need to
go,” May said. “There is no excuse for that program not to
be a national force in football.”

Following the Rich Rodriguez hire down in Tucson, May
believes ASU is now far behind the Wildcats and not in
just recruiting.

“The buzz in Arizona, it ain’t ASU it’s U of A,” May said.
“If they don’t make that kind of move at Arizona State
they’re going to be far behind, they’re already far behind
as far as concerned.”
