ESPN Insider recommends Randy Shannon for ASU
Arizona State parted ways with head coach Dennis Erickson
Monday, giving some fans an early Christmas gift.
Now it’s time for the Sun Devils to fine Erickson’s
replacement, and the search is far reaching.
There have been many names thrown out there, including
Kevin Sumlin, Larry Fedora, Mike Bellotti and many
more.
ESPN’s Mark May joined Arizona Sports 620’s Burns and
Gambo Wednesday to discuss some of his favorites for the
job.
“If they really want to get a guy that could really shake
it up out there, why not Randy Shannon,” May said. “Here’s
a guy while at Miami, had one of the highest graduation
rates in the country. All he did was do the right things
down there.”
This could be seen as a risky hire for ASU, considering
all the controversy surrounding Miami right now occurred
when while Shannon was there. However, May says that
Shannon had nothing to do with the scandal.
May thinks Shannon would bring stability to the program
for the next decade.
Another interesting name on May’s list is former Tennessee
head coach Phil Fulmer.
“He’s been trying to get a coaching job for the last
couple of years,” May said. “If you get a Phil Fulmer, guy
that’s got national appeal, he’s won a national
championship at Tennessee.”
May brought up other names as well including Western
Kentucky head coach Willie Taggart, head coach at
Louisiana Tech Sonny Dykes, Ohio head coach Frank Solich
and former Kansas head coach Mark Mangino.
