Report: ASU offers coaching gig to Sumlin

Dec 1, 2011, 8:12 PM | Updated: Dec 2, 2011, 12:30 am

As AZCentral.com’s Doug Haller tweeted
on Thursday
, Arizona State has offered
their head coaching position to University of Houston
coach Kevin Sumlin.

Information on the potential deal for Sumlin surfaced on
Wednesday, and it was believed to be in the area of $2.5
million per season. Arizona Sports’ Paul Calvisi
tweeted
on Thursday that his sources confirm that an
offer was indeed made to Sumlin’s representatives.

However, reports out of Houston refute that
information
. Sam Khan Jr., the Cougars’ beat reporter
for the Houston Chronicle, says not only was there not an
offer made to Sumlin or his representatives, but there
hasn’t been contact between the two sides. Whom to
believe?

The timing of the reported offer is interesting for a
couple of reasons. First, Sumlin and his Houston team are
two days away from playing in the Conference USA
Championship Game against Southern Mississippi for a spot
in a BCS bowl game.

Secondly, Texas A&M fired their
head coach Mike Sherman
after four years on the job,
and reports coming out of College Station indicate that
Sumlin is the number one name on the list to take the job.
