Osweiler, others support Noel Mazzone for head coach

Everyone has their candidate that they’d like to see become the next head football coach at Arizona State.

For junior quarterback Brock Osweiler, it’s current Sun Devils offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone.

“Obviously, I would like Coach Mazzone to stay here,” he said Saturday after the team’s first practice since it was announced ASU would play Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl December 22.

“I’m the first one to admit that I would not be where I’m at today without him. He’s a tremendous quarterback coach and not only a coach but he’s a father figure. He’s a great guy. I’d love Coach Mazzone to be here next year.”

Osweiler said he voiced his support for Mazzone in a recent meeting with Athletic Director Lisa Love.

“I’ve had conversations with Lisa along with some of the other juniors. There were nine of us that went in there and visited with her.”

Osweiler is doing his best to try and avoid the daily discussion of the search for a head coach. Though, he admits it’s not easy “because people are constantly asking, ‘Hey, what’s going on? Whose going to be your coach? Who do you want to be your coach?’ So as much as I would like to stay out of it, I can’t completely.”

He added that the ongoing story is weighing on him “a little bit” and like most everyone is anxious for when the new person is named.

“Whoever ASU hires, I’m going to trust that that’s the best coach for the job. I’m going to believe in that coach.”
